Moving Process

Hoisting and crane process with Windy City Movers

Sometimes the couch is fine and the staircase is the problem. Chicago's vintage buildings — tight stairwells, low landings, sharp turns — regularly defeat sofas, sectionals, armoires, and pianos. Hoisting solves it: we lift the piece outside the building and bring it in through a balcony or window, rigged and padded properly.

Why Chicago Buildings Need Hoisting

Chicago is full of beautiful buildings designed before sectional sofas existed. Vintage three-flats, courtyard walk-ups, greystones, and pre-war high-rises have stairwells sized for the furniture of their era — generous for a Victorian fainting couch, hostile to a 9-foot modern sectional. Even some newer construction has narrow service corridors and elevators that don't accommodate full-sized contemporary pieces. Hoisting isn't a workaround; it's the standard solution, and we run it weekly across the North Side, Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, and the lakefront.

When Hoisting Is the Answer

Oversized sofas and sectionals (anything 8 feet or longer is a likely candidate), sleeper couches and pull-out sofa beds (deceptively heavy with the steel frame), large dressers and armoires, dining tables that don't break down, gym equipment — treadmills and cable systems especially — and pianos headed to upper floors of walk-ups where the carry path is too tight. If it didn't come up the stairs the first time, or if it's a new piece the stairs were never going to accept, hoisting gets it in.

How It Works

We assess the building face on the quote — balcony or window access, clearance on the way up, weight class of the item, and the receiving point inside. On move day a trained rigging crew arrives with the right gear, sets up the lift, pads the item at every contact point, and lifts it controlled. Inside, a receiving crew waits at the balcony or window to bring it in. Most residential hoists complete in an hour or two including setup and teardown.

Crew, Equipment, and Safety

Hoisting is muscle and method, not winches and cranes — most apartment hoists are rope-and-pulley operations done by trained crews with full padding, secure rigging, and ground spotters. For heavier or higher work we bring crane support when the job calls for it. Either way the protocol is the same: the piece is wrapped and padded before it leaves the truck, every rigging point uses pads and straps that won't mark the finish, and we work in controlled passes — no swinging, no rushing. The item is more protected outside on a hoist than it would be wedged into a staircase that doesn't fit.

Pricing and Scheduling

Hoisting is quoted per job based on the item, the height, and the access. A second-floor balcony hoist of a sectional is the low end; a fifth-floor window hoist of a piano with crane support is the upper end. It's usually added to a move so the same crew handles both ends, but standalone hoists are welcome — sometimes the only delivery problem is one piece and one building. We can usually schedule within a week or two; same-week is possible depending on crew availability.

What You Need from Your Building

For condo and apartment buildings, management approval is usually required before move day. You'll typically need: written permission for the hoist, a certificate of insurance to the building (we provide this), and sometimes a window or balcony reservation if the building manages those. We'll tell you exactly what to request from management when we quote the job — most buildings approve hoists routinely, but starting the paperwork early saves stress later.

I had an excellent move out experience with Windy City movers. I had a two bedroom apartment that also had a piano, and I lived on the top third floor without an elevator.
